The H.W. Wilson Company is releasing new enhancements to WilsonWeb and to several of its databases, effective April 5th. We are excited about the items included in this new enhancement release, which is intended to improve the WilsonWeb search experience for its users.

New Colorful Biography Database Interface
A new colorful biography database interface is being introduced that will include Basic and Advanced search screens with new image/links that will make the biography databases even more interesting for users, giving them an opportunity to explore a variety of excellent biographies and content (see Fig. 1). The links are dynamic and will change occasionally, depending upon the biography database and the image type. Included will be such image/link categories, as “Featured Biography,” “Born On This Date,” “Topic of the Month, and “Recently Added.” There will also be four randomly selected biographies near the top of the screen.
A redesigned master record profile page is also included, providing convenient links (like “Most Recent Articles,” “Awards,” etc., as appropriate) about the person contained in the biography (see Fig. 2).

A New Biography Icon for the Art Full Text Database
A new biographies icon is being added to records in the Art Full Text database, when the subject of a record has a biography written by H.W. Wilson. Although the link is not new, this icon will help users to discover a biography about that person, when it is available. For example, a search result that includes biography links, is illustrated in Fig. 3 below.

New Cinema Image Gallery Holdings Links
For the Cinema Image Gallery database we are introducing a new “holdings” link capability. Now Cinema Image Gallery subscribers will be able to link the database to their OPAC system via a new Film Title Query. Fig. 4 below illustrates the new Holdings icon for Cinema Image Gallery and, Fig. 5 below illustrates the page within the WilsonWeb Administrator’s Module where the library administrator can setup the Film Title Query.

“My WilsonWeb” Parallel Account – Saving Multiple Records
“My WilsonWeb” – Users will now have the ability to save multiple records at one time into their parallel “My WilsonWeb” account, instead of just one at a time, as was done previously. They can now mark the desired records in the box next to the records and then click the “Save to My WilsonWeb” link, which is found next to the “Get Marked” & “Clear Marks” as illustrated in Fig. 6, below.

WilsonWeb Now Includes Diacritics/Special Characters
Diacritics/Special Characters will now be viewable in WilsonWeb records. For example, WilsonWeb has many databases that include records in languages other than English and will now represent the text in a more authentic manner. For example, articles in French will now include the appropriate accent marks, as illustrated in Fig. 7 below.
Fig. 7 – This sample HTML full text record in French illustrates the use of diacritics/special characters.

New “Print” Button Available for Auto-Citing Feature
When users have selected a specific article by clicking on the title of the record found on their search results page, they will be able to click on the “Cite” button to bring up a popup window that shows simplified adaptations of citing in MLA, APA, Chicago/Turabian: Humanities and Chicago/Turabian: Date-Author formats. As a convenience to users, the new “Print” button has been added to the popup window, as illustrated in Fig. 8 below.

DOIs (Digital Object Identifier) To Be Included in Record Citations
Wilson has started including DOIs, when available, in its record citations. DOIs will be included going forward, but will not be retroactively included, due to the sheer size of the effort that this would require. As an important new component found in WilsonWeb databases, the DOI addition will help users that are required to use the most recent APA standards for citing. In the not too distant future, we expect DOIs to become part of the Auto-Citing feature for WilsonWeb, as well. See Fig. 9 below.

Embedded Images in HTML Full Text
H.W. Wilson has started adding available images to its HTML Full Text in records going forward, when available. This enhancement will contribute to the information available to users, when viewing the full text of an article. For an example, see Fig. 10 below.

“Content Discovery Keys” in Search Results Arranged For More Convenience
On WilsonWeb’s search results pages, the popular “Content Discovery Keys” have now been arranged for added convenience to users. The “Content Discovery Keys” are now arranged in the following order, from top to bottom. For an example, see Fig. 11 below.
- Narrow These Results – Clicking on the choices available (these can vary depending upon the database), the user opens the category by clicking on the category name (like By Author, By Subject, etc.) and then selects one of the items presented, narrowing the result set to the right of the Content Discovery Keys.
- New Search By Subject – WilsonWeb offers alternative Subject headings for the users consideration , giving users possibilities for an entirely new search in the database.
- My WilsonWeb – If the user has logged onto their parallel My WilsonWeb account, links to the various components or their account are listed.
- Recent Searches – This is what is often referred to as a “breadcrumb trail.” It lists all recent searches, giving the user the ability by clicking on any one the earlier searches , returning to that search.
