Print, Email, or Save Persistent/Durable Links

When using WilsonWeb, you can print, email, or save the URL addresses of full-text articles (when available in html format and/or PDF format) or the full citation of an article, as a Persistent/Durable link. This feature is typically used to retrieve a specific full-text article after the searching session has ended. You can retrieve the article directly without going through the usual WilsonWeb authentication process and article search. Those that are approved for using the WilsonWeb database, have access to the Persistent/Durable URL link for as long as the subscription is maintained.

Here is how it works:

It is possible to save a Persistent URL from two different areas of the WilsonWeb interface. The first is from the Full display of the record and the second is from the Print Email Save page.

A. From the Full Display of the record

After retrieving a record and viewing the Full citation display (see the Full button on the bottom taskbar) you will notice in the Persistent URL field the following possible links.

When full text is available, the following link(s) are displayed in the Persistent URL field.

Click to copy the HTML full text article

and/or

Click to copy the PDF full text article

When full text is not available, the following link is displayed in the Persistent URL field.

Click to copy the article citation

There are then two possible ways to proceed, depending upon how you would like the record displayed or saved.

  1. If you want to save only the Persistent Link, which is then clickable when retrieving the record at a later date, hold your cursor over the desired link and right click your mouse. You will then select (depending upon the browser being used) Copy Shortcut (Internet Explorer), Copy Link Address (Netscape), or Copy Link Location (Firefox). This will then save the record to your clipboard and the record can then be simply pasted into another application such as Word, or into your email. It should look something like the following:

    http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?recid=0bc05f7a67b1790ee6876fc1fce9449 b4571113a035b933bc9c3c29f8f56a497ee85b4ad436153aa&fmt=H

Once copied to the application, remember to place the cursor at the end of the URL and then click the Return button on your computer’s keyboard. For most applications this will convert the URL into a hyperlink, which then can be saved. Of course, you can always copy the URL into the address bar of your browser to retrieve the record, as well.

    Note:
Mac users may have a different series of steps related to left/right click type functionality of their mouse to accomplish this function.

  2. If you want to save the Persistent Link, as well as, a short description of the record, hold your cursor over the desired link and left click your mouse. Depending upon the browser being used, a popup window indicating that either the record has been copied onto the browser’s clipboard, or other instructions (such as Use ctrl+c to copy the link onto the clipboard and the ctrl+v to paste the link you’re your email or document). Important: Be sure to follow any directions appearing in the popup window for your browser. Also, the link in the popup window must be highlighted, before using ctrl+c to copy the link. Some browser versions do not automatically highlight the link.

The record when pasted should look something like the following:

    http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtmlrecid=
    0bc05f7a67b1790ee6876fc1fce9449 b4571113a035b933bc9c3c29f8f56a497ee85b4ad436153aa&fmt=H

    On Belonging. Metalsmith v. 25 no. 1 (Winter 2005) p. 14-15

Important: Before this record is saved as a hyperlink in most applications, you must first place your cursor at the end of the URL (ending with “H” or “P” or “C”) and click the Enter key on your computer. This action will covert the URL to a hyperlink and place a space between the URL and the brief description about the specific record. Of course, you can always copy the URL into the address bar of your browser to retrieve the record, as well.

B. Emailing and Saving the Persistent URL from the Print Email Save page

After retrieving a record and then proceeding to the Print Email Save page, you will notice that when an article has been emailed or saved in either the FULL TEXT & Images included, if available or All Citation Fields/Custom display formats, the Persistent URL field includes the following choices:

Click to copy the HTML full text article

and/or

Click to copy the PDF full text article

When full text is not available, the following link is displayed in the Persistent URL field.

Click to copy the article citation

As described in #1 & #2 in section A. above, the URL can be saved or emailed from this copy of the record.

Printing the Persistent URL from the Print Email Save page

When printing a record in either the FULL TEXT & Images included, if available or All Citation Fields/Custom display formats, the Persistent URL field includes the “actual” Persistent URL. This URL can then be pasted into the browser’s address bar for retrieval of the article full text or citation, or then it can be saved into another application and saved as a hyperlink.
