Using the Journal Directory

You can dynamically create a customized list from Wilson’s data repository that includes details about sources of periodical items in each database. You can generate a list that covers more than one database, confine your list to a single subject, determine how many journals are included or displayed per page, select whether the output is in HTML or Text format (for use in other applications like Access or Excel), or send it as an email.

Wilson has included the ability to create lists down to the issue level directly from the Journal Directory. Simply click directly on a journal’s name to retrieve a table that includes the issues indexed. For WilsonWeb subscribers, it is also possible to retrieve all articles indexed within an issue, through the Journal Directory. Click directly on the issue to automatically authenticate subscribers and retrieve the articles, or first present a Login page for ID and Password entry, before going on to the appropriate articles.

Accessing the Journal Directory

There are two places from which to gain access to WilsonWeb’s Journal Directory:

  • From Wilson’s Home page at www.hwwilson.com. Look for the Journal Directory link. Once there, you can generate a current listing of journals indexed for the various WilsonWeb databases.

  • If you are searching a WilsonWeb database, click the Journal Directory button found on each WilsonWeb screen. A customized Journal Directory for that specific database will be created for you. If you are searching more than one WilsonWeb database, a combined report will be generated for you.

Creating a Customized List

If you want to generate a list that covers more than one database, press and hold the Ctrl key and click on additional database names.

You can confine your list to a single subject, determine how many journals are included or displayed per page, and select whether the output is in HTML or Text format (for use in other applications like Access or Excel).

Check additional options from the Limit to, Fields Displayed, and Sort by choices, to produce a completely unique list tailored to your needs.

Finally, click on the Display List button to create the customized journal list.

To email the complete list:
Click the Email Journal List tab, the entire list will be emailed in the format you originally requested.

To email, print, or save your list:
Use the browser functions, however, you can only work with the individual pages displayed off your list.

To email from your browser:
Click Edit, Select All in the menu, then Edit, Copy. Open your email application and click Edit, Paste.

To print from your browser:
Click File, Print in the menu. If you have Adobe Acrobat Distiller or Acrobat PDFWriter installed, you can make a PDF file through your printing options.

How Wilson Counts Periodicals for the Journal Directory

A journal that has had several titles in its lifetime will be counted only once in the Wilson Journal Directory count number, although all titles will appear on the journal list that is displayed. Although separate records are created for each title for publications that have changed the title of a journal, records for former titles are excluded from the count. Records for periodicals that have ceased or suspended publication, or that have been dropped from indexing, are included as long as that journal’s content remains in the Wilson database.

Wilson uses the CTJ field (Count This Journal) as the basis for determining the journal count for our Journal Directory. The CTJ field represents the code that indicates whether a periodical should be included in the count of periodicals indexed.
