Fiction Core Collection is the electronic version of Wilson's standard reference work Fiction Core Collection. Fiction Core Collection is a selective annotated list of fiction for adults that includes both established and contemporary works either written in or translated into English. Out-of-print titles are included, and analytical entries are made for composite works. The catalog is intended for collection development and for readers' guidance and reference service in public and undergraduate libraries.

Using Limit Fields

AB Abstract

The AB field contains a summary of the document. You can search any word or phrase in the abstract.

ABI Abstract Indicator

The ABI field indicates whether the record includes an abstract of the article. The field contains a "y" if an abstract is present.

AN Accession Number
(a limit field)

The AN field contains a unique number that identifies the document.

AU Personal Author

The AU field identifies a person responsible for the intellectual content of the document. Search last name only or first name and last name, in any order. You can also search personal author names by last name using the Personal Author list in Browse.

CA Corporate Author

The CA field identifies the institution, association, conference, corporation, or government agency that is the author of a book.

CL Children's Literature

The CL field contains a "y" to indicate that the book is a work of children's literature.

CON Contents Note

The CON field lists titles of essays included in a book.

CP Country of Publication
(a limit field)

The CP field indicates the place of publication of either the journal or book. You can search the content of this field in the Country of Publication list in Browse.

CSO Chapter Source

The CSO field gives the title of the book in which the essay or book chapter was found.

DAC Date Added to Collection

The DAC field contains the year, month, and day in which a book record was added to the database in the format yyyymmdd. You can search for a single date using in as shown above. In addition, you can search for a range of dates. Books added in 2005 or earlier have a date of the first of January of the year of publication.

DDC Dewey Decimal Number

The DDC field lists the Dewey Decimal classification number for books. The example above retrieves all records for books with the specific call number 398.2. Use the <starts> operator to retrieve records for books with any Dewey Decimal call number beginning with 39.

DT Document Type

The Document Type field describes the contents of the record. There are two document types: books and book chapter. You can limit your search to books only or to chapters only.

ED Edition(s) Note

The ED field contains information about other editions of the book, including the name of the publisher, and price and ISBN, if available.

FI Fiction Indicator

The LCCN field contains the Library of Congress control number that applies to a catalog record. It usually consists of two or four digits for the year and a serial number of one to six digits.

NT Notes

The NT field is a note that contains additional information not included in other fields in the record.

OT Other Titles

The OT field provides additional title access. It may include descriptive words added by indexers to augment the title. You can search any word or phrase in this field.

PA Pages

The PA field gives the total number of pages in a book.

The PY field contains the year in which the document was published. This field is range searchable.

You can search a range of dates using the and operator:

RS Responsibility Statement

The RS field is a statement about persons who have contributed to the creation of the work. This could include the authors, as well as names of persons who translated, illustrated, edited, or compiled the work.

SU Subject(s)

The SU field contains a controlled vocabulary term that describes the document. The field can include personal names, topical terms, organization names, geographic names, and uniform titles.

TI Title

The TI field contains the full title of the original document. You can search for any word or phrase in the title.

TSN Series

The TSN field indicates the title of the series.

UD Update Code

The UD field contains the year, month, and day in which the record was added or revised in the database in the format yyyymmdd. You can search for a single date using in as shown above. In addition, you can search for a range of dates.

Using Limit Fields

Limit fields, when combined with other search terms, are particularly useful for focusing or limiting a search. To search a limit field, use the in operator with the field abbreviation, such as symposium in dt. Omitting the field label retrieves information from free text (non-limit) fields only.

For limit fields containing numeric data, you can also use other special operators:
