Readers' Guide Abstracts is a database containing comprehensive indexing and abstracting of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States and Canada.

The abstracts average 125 words in length. Two types of abstracts are included. Informative abstracts convey the content, scope, and complexity of the source article, and are the predominant form used. Indicative abstracts describe the subject of the source article and are reserved for how-to articles, humorous essays, personal accounts, and recipes.

Using Limit Fields

AB Abstract

The AB field contains a summary of the document. You can search any word or phrase in the abstract.

ABI Abstract Indicator
(a limit field)

y in abi

The ABI field indicates whether the record includes an abstract of the article. The field contains a "y" if an abstract is present.

AN Accession Number
(a limit field)

The AN field contains a unique number that identifies the document.

AU Personal Author

The AU field identifies a person responsible for the intellectual content of the document. Search last name only or first name and last name, in any order. You can also search personal author names by last name using the Personal Author list in Browse.

BR Books Reviewed

You can search any word or phrase in this field. The BR field contains the title and author of a book being reviewed in the record for a review.

CA Corporate Author

The CA field identifies the institution, association, conference, corporation, or government agency that is the author of a book. You can search the content of this field in the Free Text list in Browse.

DT Document Type
(a limit field)

The DT field describes the contents of the document. Use this field to limit your search to items of a particular type of document, such as biography or interview. This field contains keywords that characterize the article contents.

PRI Peer Reviewed Journal

The PY field contains the year in which the document was published. This field is range searchable.

UD Update Code
(a limit field)

Using Limit Fields

Limit fields, when combined with other search terms, are particularly useful for focusing or limiting a search. To search a limit field, use the in operator with the field abbreviation, such as symposium in dt. Omitting the field label retrieves information from free text (non-limit) fields only.

For limit fields containing numeric data, you can also use other special operators:

Combine this type of numeric-field range search with another search term:
