  New WilsonWeb Enhancements

Español: Novedades (Julio 2009)

New MLA (Modern Language Association) Auto-citing Update

The MLA auto-citing feature in WilsonWeb has been updated to include recommendations from the latest MLA Handbook, Seventh Edition. Our citing follows the recommendations for “A Periodical Publication in an Online Database.” You will notice that MLA no longer requires that the Journal Name and the database name be underlined, but rather that they be italicized. Additionally, they no longer require that the user include the library name or system, city and state in their bibliography. “Web” has been added to indicate the medium of publication consulted, plus the date of access (day, month, and year).

The document “How to Cite Articles” has been updated to reflect these new changes.

ReadSpeaker (text-to-speech)—Demo: ReadSpeaker  / Demo: ReadSpeaker   ESPAÑOL

Audio is available for all Full Text HTML records. This link can be found in the full text popup window for records in the HTML format (as illustrated below), as well as, in the single view of a full text HTML record found by clicking on the title of the record. The user may then select from the Male or Female voice choice, plus save the record in an MP3 format for later listening.

Listening to records is now possible in biography databases.

“My WilsonWeb"—Demo: My WilsonWeb

There are four primary enhancements to the user’s parallel account called “My WilsonWeb.”

  • A new folders area for Saved Articles. Users can create folders in which to save articles.

  • The My Notes area has been added so that users can save any desired notes to themselves.

  • Within the Customize Interface area, users can now determine the fields they wish to display within records, eliminating those of no interest.

  • Users can now Print, Email, Save, Cite and Export records within “My WilsonWeb.”

Note: The outline of the Saved Searches, Saved Alert, etc., as illustrated in the image above, is also now repeated on the search results page, under “Content Discovery Keys.” A user can return to their “My WilsonWeb” account, from there.

Clicking on the “Create New Folder” link will return the following page.

On the Customize Interface page, users can now change field selections within record types, if desired.

Search Screen Changes

There are several additions to the search screens, as illustrated below:

  • A new Skip Links feature is available for those using electronic readers. The link will not be visible to most users (as illustrated below), but will be seen by electronic readers. Its purpose is to help users skip over repetitive links found on each page.

  • There is a new Text Size zoom feature directly on the interface for those with visual issues. It results in a proportional increase to the text size. This is in addition to any browser zoom feature.

  • The Interface Language dropdown has expanded the language translations to most buttons, links and fields within the record. The languages currently available include English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

  • A single “Search” button is now on the navigational bar. Basic Search and Advanced Search are now choices above the search box and the user can easily toggle between the two.

  • Both the Journal Directory and My WilsonWeb buttons have been moved to the navigational bar, as illustrated below.

Translate English Language Documents into Other Languages

Now, Full Text HTML formatted records can be translated from English into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Dutch, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. This expansion of available language translations should be very helpful to some users where English is not their first language. Although the translation is a fast, computer-generated result, it should be a good tool for opening up the meaning of many records available only in English. A better translation of these records would require human intervention.

Once a record of interest is found, the user should click on the Full Text HTML link, if available, and then select a language from the dropdown window for translating the document. Finally, the user will click the Translate button. Should the user then want to return to the English translation, they should simply click the Back to Original Document link. See screen shot below:

Translate Various Non-English Language Documents

Available in many WilsonWeb databases are documents in other languages. Now, German, French, Italian, Spanish & Portuguese articles can be translated into English. This feature is available for all Full Text HTML formatted records.

Language of Interface

The user can change the language of most buttons, links and fields within a record into English (the default), German, French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese. This will be useful for users that might not use English as their first language.

“Jump To” Page Navigation

This enhancement expands users ability to move within a results set, if desired. They can now do more than just selecting the next/previous page or move to the beginning/end of results.

Cinema Image Gallery Limiters

For the convenience of user that use the Advanced Search Screen, users can now include “Film Records” and/or “Image Records” as a limiter on their original search.

Cinema Image Gallery now has a new way of displaying images. In addition to Viewing All Images, users can now elect “View Slide Show of Image Records” as a format choice. Click the title of the image to get to the page that offers these image viewing choices.

Current Issues – Social Networking

A new “Comment(s)” link found on the issues/subtopics pages, will allow users to now post comments about the various issue or subtopics within the database. After comments have been reviewed as suitable, they will be posted on the cite, giving all users the opportunity to see postings.

Biographies – Image and Name into Background Collection

When a user has gone into the WilsonWeb background collection for a person (by clicking on the Most Recent Articles” link, or Books About the person, for example), the persons image, plus information about search will be echoed at the top of the screen, as illustrated below.

Co-Branding Administrator’s Module

Greatly expanding the ability of libraries to offer co-branding icons for the WilsonWeb interface, libraries can now have up to two co-branding icons for each User Class created.

Miscellaneous Enhancements to WilsonWeb - Improving Visual Features

Although WilsonWeb is already compliant with Section 508 and other standards, it has now moved beyond the usual requirements for accommodating users with visual problems. Now included are the following:

  • Modified font (designed for legibility, accommodating other languages, and improved standardization between databases).

  • Users can conveniently change the font size on the interface (in addition to the browser’s zoom capabilities).

  • Font and Link colors have been unified, eliminating awkward variations.

Shibboleth access via InCommon, is now available on WilsonWeb.

The WilsonWeb Administrator’s Module now offers the InCommon Federation as an authentication default setting (“US Higher Education”), if desired. This is in addition to other Shibboleth access choices via the UK Federation or SWITCHaai. The WilsonWeb Login page now offers the link “Shibboleth access via InCommon.” For complete information, see the document titled InCommon Federation: Participant Operational Practices.

WilsonWeb Search WidgetNew!

WilsonWeb now offers a new Search Widget. A customer can now create a single search text entry box (similar to the WilsonWeb Basic Search screen) on any page they have created, giving users the ease of doing a WilsonWebWilsonWeb Search Widget Screen Shot search from any page location. Users will be authenticated either by their IP/Referrer Page authentication (the default) or by UserID and Password. Customers now have the option to search WilsonWeb without first having to go to WilsonWeb’s native interface, if desired.
