H.W. Wilson Announces U.S. National Debate Topic 2010-2011: The American Military Presence Overseas
New Volume in the Reference
Shelf Book
Series
New York, NY,
June 22, 2010
H.W. Wilsons popular Reference Shelf book series today released a new
title
that explores the subject of the 2011 U.S. National High School Policy
Debate-U.S.
National Debate Topic 2010–2011: The American Military Presence Overseas.
The volume examines if and to what extent America should reduce its
military
presence around the globe, with a special focus on Afghanistan, Iraq,
Turkey,
Japan and South Korea.
A National High School
Policy Debate is held each year, and Wilson’s Reference Shelf series
issues a
book each year on the topic. Articles in U.S. National Debate Topic
2010–2011: The American Military Presence Overseas are perfect
preparation
for the upcoming tournament, as well as informative reading for other
researchers and the general public.
Section one, “Rome
Revisited? The U.S. Military Presence Around the World,” provides an
overview
of U.S. troop deployments internationally, and considers whether America
has
become an empire, as some critics contend. Section two, “Afghanistan:
‘Graveyard of Empires’?” focuses on America’s recent choice of “surge”
versus
withdrawal from the war in Afghanistan. The third section, “Iraq: Should
We
Stay or Should We Go?” explores the prudence and feasibility of the
Obama plan
to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq by 2011. Articles in the fourth
section,
“Turkey: Strategic Crossroads,” highlight America’s increasingly complex
relationship with a country that straddles both a literal and figurative
divide
between the West and the Middle East, and the site of historically
coveted strategic
terrain. Entries in the fifth and sixth sections: “Japan: From Article 9
to
‘Yankee Go Home’” and “South Korea: The 38th Parallel and Beyond”
examine the
United States’ military alliances with Japan and South Korea, and
whether the
U.S. presence in northeast Asia is as crucial as it was when established
more
than half a century ago.
U.S. National
Debate
Topic 2010-2011: The American Military Presence Overseas is the third title of
