NEW 20TH EDITION OF SEARS LIST OF SUBJECT HEADINGS

New York, NY, July 9, 2010
A new 20th edition of the Sears List of Subject Headings is now available, the H.W. Wilson Company today announced. In libraries since 1923, the Sears List provides small to mid-sized libraries with a foundation of essential, up-to-date headings, together with patterns and examples to guide librarians in creating further headings efficiently and according to standard.

The new edition features more than 300 new subject headings. New headings reflect the growing literature in areas of ecology and environment, such as Rainforest ecology, Grassland ecology, Climate change, and Sustainable agriculture. The expanding literature on dinosaurs has warranted new headings for the various species, such as Raptorex, Pteranodon, and Edmontosaurus. New trends in social networking are represented with headings such as Twitter (Web site) and Facebook (Web site). A number of new headings for arts and crafts have been established, such as Acrylic painting and Wire craft. Headings referring to peoples and places have also been reorganized to reflect modern political sensibilities: Soviet Union headings have been canceled in favor of period subdivisions under Russia—History, and Indians has been re-establis hed to denote the people of India, rather than Native Americans.

Many of the new headings were suggested by librarians representing institutions of various sizes and types, by commercial vendors of bibliographic records, and the catalogers, indexers and subject specialists at the H.W. Wilson Company.

In these and other areas, abundant provisions have been added for creating new headings as needed, and more than 1,400 notes have been added indicating that headings may be subdivided geographically.

Principles of the Sears List (a statement of the theoretical foundations of the Sears List and a concise introduction to subject cataloguing in general), continues in this edition, featuring expanded rationale for the geographical subdivision of headings. The List of Commonly Used Subdivisions also remains, listing (for easy reference) every subdivision for which there is a provision in the Sears List.

Sears List of Subject Headings is also available in database format, and as a Spanish-language adaptation, Sears: Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia. Review copies of Sears List of Subject Headings, 20th Edition are available. For more information, visit www.hwwilson.com.
