H.W. Wilson Announces Evolution
New Volume in The Reference Shelf Book Series
New York, New York, October 27, 2006
H.W. Wilson today announced
Evolution, a new work in the company's popular Reference
Shelf book series. Evolution explores the most important
debates, discoveries, and people shaping this cornerstone biological
theory, offering an overview of its tenets in biographies of its
forefathers; an examination of the political debate between
evolutionists and proponents of "intelligent design"; a look at
revelations emerging from the genetic and fossil records; and
exploration of the evolution of higher intelligence.
Twenty-four articles from such leading sources as
New Scientist, Natural History, National Review, Newsweek and others
provide an up-to-date grounding on what remains a contentious and
changing idea nearly 150 years since its introduction. Three
appendices round out the volume: "Was the World Made for Man?" (an
essay by Mark Twain); and Kitzmiller, et al. v. Dover Area
School District, et al. and Edwards, Governor of Louisiana,
et al. v. Aguillard et al., two controversial court opinions on
the teaching of evolution in schools. Evolution also includes
a bibliography of books, Web sites, and abstracts of articles for
further reading.
Evolution is the fifth title of six to be
released in The Reference Shelf 2006 (Volume 78). Each book in the
Reference Shelf series offers extensive exploration of a topic of
importance in modern society, in a compilation of notable articles
from respected publications, plus abstracts of 20 to 30 additional
articles and a bibliography of other sources. Reference Shelf
volumes provide a well-rounded, unbiased overview for researchers
and general readers. Volume 78 includes Global Climate Change
(March 2006), New Media (April 2006), U.S. National Debate
Topic 2006-2007: National Service (August 2006), Jobs
in America (September 2006), Evolution, and the upcoming
volume Representative American Speeches 2005-2006. Libraries
that order the complete 6-volume set receive a substantial discount.
H.W. Wilson now also offers a WilsonWeb database
that presents well-rounded overviews of select modern issues, in the
tradition of The Reference Shelf. Current Issues: Reference Shelf
Plus delivers carefully selected full-text articles from key
publications on social, scientific, health, political, and global
issues, organized by topic for easy access. Users get current
articles with periodic updates, plus the option to launch preset
searches on WilsonWeb or the Internet. Current Issues: Reference
Shelf Plus features a selection of topics largely distinct from
those covered by the Reference Shelf print series. Free 30-day
trials are available for librarians and members of the press. For
