H.W. WILSON RENEWS
SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS WITH COMMITMENT
OF $560,000
TO A.L.A. ACCREDITED
LIBRARY SCHOOLS
New York, New York,
February 14th, 2003
The
Board of Directors of The H.W.
Wilson Foundation has announced
continuation of its support of
education in library and information
science with a new round of
scholarship grants.
Since 1957, H.W.
Wilson has supported U.S. and
Canadian library and information
science schools accredited by the
American Library Association. This
year’s scholarship program, the 12th
consecutive, will deliver grants of
$10,000 to each of 56 schools, for a
total of $560,000. Grants will be
distributed over four years
(2004-2007).
Attracting potential
librarians to the field and
supporting qualified students are
major goals of the program.
Announcing the renewal, William E.
Stanton, President of the H.W.
Wilson Foundation, reported that
scholarship aid to library and
information science schools has been
affected by the soft economy and the
diminution of both public and
private support.
Mr. Stanton said,
"The Foundation Board is
steadfast in its commitment to
assist qualified library and
information science students.
Educating the next generation of
librarians is particularly important
as the profession goes through such
momentous changes."
The program allows
each school to distribute its grant
in accordance with its own
scholarship criteria, as well as to
divide the total sum to accommodate
a local institution’s particular
needs. Library schools which receive
accreditation during any of the
program years will receive grants
the year following accreditation.
