From the case for a pre-emptive strike on Iraq to criticism of the
war and its failure to turn up weapons of mass destruction; from
issues of homeland security to the shadow they cast on our
fundamental rights as Americans, Representative
American Speeches 2002-2003 features timely addresses by
U.S. leaders that capture the times in which we live. Here readers
will find talks by President George W. Bush, Colin Powell,
Tom Ridge, Condoleezza Rice, Edward Kennedy, Hillary
Clinton, Joseph Lieberman, and others, on issues now at
the forefront of public debate: War and Foreign Policy, Homeland
Security, and Freedom of Speech. Two other sections of the volume
feature speeches on perennial issues: The Welfare of Children and
The Spirit of Adventure.
Twenty-nine speeches are
featured in total, along with a cumulative speaker index for Representative
American Speeches volumes back to 2000. An index to subjects
touched on by the 2002-2003 speeches rounds out the new work.
Representative American Speeches
2002-2003 completes Volume 75 of The
Reference Shelf Series, a library standard since 1922. Other than
the unique Representative American Speeches compilations, each book
in the yearly six-book set brings together 20 or more notable
articles from diverse national publications, exploring current
subjects from multiple perspectives for the benefit of researchers,
students, and general readers. For extended research, Reference
Shelf titles also provide abstracts of 20 to 30 additional articles
and a bibliography of other helpful sources.
All six titles from
Volume 75 (which also includes The American Family, Intellectual
Property, The Muslim World, Urban Planning, and Warfare
in the 21st Century) are still available. Volume 76 (2004) will
include Homeland Security, The United Nations (U.S.
National Debate Topic 2004-2005), The Two Koreas, The
U.S. Election System, The Car and Its Future, and Representative
American Speeches 2003-2004. Libraries that order complete
6-volume sets receive a substantial discount.
