New Spanish-Language Adaptation of Sears List of Subject Headings
Sears: Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia Brings
User-Friendly Subject Access to Libraries Serving Spanish-Speaking
Populations
New York, New York, June 20, 2008
H.W. Wilson today debuted a new Spanish-language adaptation of
its renowned Sears List of Subject Headings —
Sears: Lista de
Encabezamientos de Materia.
Sears: Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia
provides Spanish subject authorities for bibliographic control of
both English and Spanish-language books and other library materials.
Its more than 10,000 subject headings include every heading from
Sears List of Subject Headings, 19th Edition, translated
according to current Spanish and Latin American usage, as well as
many headings of special interest to Spanish speakers, among them
hundreds of Latin American national and geographic descriptors.
The entire "Principles of the Sears List" section
-- long a popular tool for teaching subject heading principles and
vocabulary control -- has also been adapted, offering a concise
Spanish-language tutorial.
The first Spanish adaptation of the Sears List
in more than 20 years, Sears: Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia
incorporates the work of Carmen Rovira, editor of the 1984 edition.
The new edition has been edited by Iván E Calimano, Ph.D., assistant
professor, Center for Graduate Studies, Interamerican University of
Puerto Rico. Dr. Calimano brings broad experience in cataloging and
classification, including work with the Bilindex system, to the
development of Sears: Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia.
