H.W. Wilson Announces U.S. National Debate Topic 2005-2006: U.S. Civil Liberties
Topical New Volume Is Perfect Preparation for 2006 Student Tournament

New York, New York, July 12, 2005
H.W. Wilson today announced publication of U.S. National Debate Topic 2005-2006: U.S. Civil Liberties. New in Wilson's popular Reference Shelf book series, the volume focuses on controversies that will be the subject of the upcoming National High School Policy Debate, an annual tournament involving students nationwide.

With reprints of 23 articles from diverse publications, U.S. National Debate Topic 2005-2006: U.S. Civil Liberties offers a balanced sampling of today's opinions on civil liberties, offsetting politically moderate articles with essays from both left- and right-wing sources. The volume examines a wide range of complex and interrelated issues, many of which arose in the wake of the September 11th attacks.

Five sections include "Civil Liberties and Terrorism," "Racial Profiling," "Detention Without Charge," "Regulating Morality: Same-Sex Marriage and Abortion," and "Who Watches the Watchers?". Three appendices are also featured: Relevant Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and The Defense of Marriage Act.

U.S. National Debate Topic 2005-2006: U.S. Civil Liberties is the third title of six to be released in The Reference Shelf 2005 (Volume 77). Each book in The Reference Shelf series offers extensive exploration of a current topic of importance in modern society, in a compilation of notable articles from respected publications, plus abstracts of 20 to 30 additional articles and a bibliography of other sources. Reference Shelf volumes provide a well-rounded, unbiased overview for researchers and general readers. Volume 77 includes The European Union (February 2005), Free Trade (April 2005), U.S. National Debate Topic 2005-2006: U.S. Civil Liberties, as well as the upcoming titles Women's Rights, The United States Supreme Court, and Representative American Speeches 2004-2005. Libraries that order the complete 6-volume set receive a substantial discount.

Review copies of Reference Shelf volumes are available for members of the press.
