New Second Edition of Dictionary of Military Terms
Timely Guide to the Lexicon of Warfare
Unlocks the Terms Behind the Headlines
New
York, New York, July 2nd, 2003
H.W. Wilson today announced
a timely new edition of Dictionary of
Military Terms: A Guide to the Language of Warfare and Military Institutions.
Including terms that emerged from Operation Iraqi Freedom and the war on
terror, plus other vernacular central to today's technologic and strategic
security initiatives, the Second Edition delivers definitions of more than
3,500 terms, from ancient times to the present. About 1,000 terms have been
added, reflecting momentous developments in the 17 years since the first
edition was published.
Strategy, tactics, weapons,
fortifications, organizations, ranks, administration—all aspects of military
and naval affairs are covered, in a single alphabetical list. From nicknames,
to official designations, to battlefield maneuvers, meanings and derivations
are provided, including any battles, wars, or units for which the terms are
especially significant. The volume will appeal to military professionals,
students, researchers, history buffs, and anyone interested in a deeper
understanding of military operations that we now confront daily in the news
media.
Defined in detail are
such wide-ranging terms as:
-
FLOT—"forward
line of own troops"
-
Joint
strike fighter—A multipurpose attack/fighter aircraft
(Lockheed Martin) designed to operate from ground bases or from carriers
-
Kashmiri
secessionists—Islamic fundamentalists seeking to impose
Muslim control over the part of Kashmir under Indian administration since
the first Indian-Pakistani war in 1947
-
Tattoo—A
drumbeat or a bugle call at night, signifying that enlisted personnel
should go to their quarters; or alternately, a display of military
exercises offered as entertainment
-
Teutonic
Knights—A monastic order of German priest-knights,
established in Jerusalem in 1198
-
NBC—Nonbattle
casualty
-
Operation
Mongoose—A covert operation ordered by President Kennedy in
November 1961, to initiate actions against Cuba designed to harass the
Castro regime and, if possible, to bring about its overthrow
…plus many others.
Common-language definitions and extensive cross-references make research fast
and simple.
The first edition of Dictionary
of Military Terms (H.W. Wilson, 1986) was hailed by American
Reference Books Annual as "an excellently conceived and
presented volume," and by Library
Journal as "an excellent source of information."
Review copies of the Second
Edition are available for members of the working press.
