New Volume in The Reference Shelf Book Series

H.W. Wilson today announced
U.S. National
Debate Topic 2006-2007: National Service, a new work in the
company's popular Reference Shelf book series. The volume focuses on
the topic of the upcoming National High School Policy Debate (an
annual tournament involving students nationwide), which questions
whether the U.S. should pass legislation aimed to increase the
number of citizens involved in such national service programs as
AmeriCorps, Citizen Corps, Senior Corps, Peace Corps, and the Armed
Forces.
Debate clubs, students, and general readers will
value the volume's discussion of the history of U.S. national
service programs, the prospect of a new military draft, the idea of
mandatory national service and a universal service program, the
efficacy of community service programs, and political clashes over
their funding. The basic question of how much power the state should
have over the daily lives of its citizens arises throughout the
chapters.
Two appendices are featured: President Kennedy's
"Statement Upon Signing Order Establishing the Peace Corps"
(Executive Order 10924), and a National Service Timeline, courtesy
of the Corporation of National and Community Service. A bibliography

completes the volume.

Service is the third title of six to be released in The
