Q. Will my next renewal from Wilson be priced at the same rate as OCLC?

A. Yes.

Q. How will the dual access to both platforms work with my subscription period?

A. OCLC will continue to offer renewals and new subscriptions to Wilson databases on FirstSearch through July 31, 2010, and will ensure access to these databases through the end of each subscribing library's current subscription period. Wilson will provide libraries that subscribe to its databases on FirstSearch with parallel subscriptions on WilsonWeb at no additional charge. We want to give FirstSearch libraries sufficient time to easily migrate to the WilsonWeb platform.

Q. If a library would like to be billed by Wilson prior to August 1 is it permissible?

Q. My library prefers to have all subscriptions in a common start date. Will pro-rating of subscriptions be permitted?

Q. What is the difference between Wilson Select Plus on FirstSearch and Wilson's OmniFile database?

A. Wilson's OmniFile Full Text Select database is the counterpart to Wilson Select Plus on FirstSearch. Omni File Full Text Select has 2920 titles. WilsonSelect Plus has 2682 titles. There are 223 additional titles in OmniFile Full Text Select. Download OmniFile Full Text Select Excel Sheet.

Q. Are there differences in other Wilson FirstSearch databases compared to WilsonWeb?

A. Yes. Book Review Digest and other databases have additional content. A summary of differences by database is forthcoming.

Q. My library subscribes to Wilson Package 1 and Package 2 on FirstSearch. Will these packages be offered on WilsonWeb?

A. Yes.

Q. Is there a journal list available for each database?

Q. I've heard that WilsonWeb has a different way in how it defines its Peer Reviewed journals. Is that true?

Q. What are the major differences in the FirstSearch platform compared to WilsonWeb?

A. WilsonWeb has tailored its system to search and display Wilson data most effectively. We have introduced a host of features for the optimum search experience among all types of users. More information is available at: http://www.hwwilson.com/Documentation/WilsonWeb/tecfaq7.html

Q. What are some of the key features of WilsonWeb that will improve the search experience of our users?

  1. "My WilsonWeb" is a parallel account set up by the user. They may save searches, save individual records, create files for their records, write notes to themselves and customize the interface for their own purposes.
  2. Text-to-Speech (audio) - All HTML Full Text records can be not only read, but converted into audio. Users may then save the audio in MP3 format for later listening, if desired.
  3. Translate the Interface - English is the default setting, but users may translate button, links and most fields into German, French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese, if desire.
  4. Translate HTML Full Text record. If the record is in English, translate the record to German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, or Simplified Chinese. Records in German, French, Italian and Spanish can be translated into English.
  5. Interlibrary Loan feature - links to library's ILL form, using Open URL technology.
  6. Library Owns? This is a dynamic holdings feature that links to the library's OPAC system.
  7. WilsonLink. Wilson sponsors a free SFX link resolver, helping users to locate full text within its electronic collection.
  8. WilsonWeb offers to libraries the ability to create up to 3 customized links. They can be used for such items as a link to an events calendar, library hours, the reference desk, How-to-Cite information, etc.
  9. Libraries may make the interface their "own" by creating up to 2 co-branding icons that appear on the interface screens. These icons are linkable to any site desired.
  10. Auto-Citing in MLA, APA, Chicago/Turabian styles.

Q. How can the WilsonWeb interface be customized?

A. WilsonWeb has several levels of customization possible.

  1. The system Administrator can choose among a variety of customization options, all designed to provide the best possible interface for a library's patrons. http://www.hwwilson.com/documentation/WilsonWeb/wweb_admin_customization_chart.htm
  2. Users may use the Customize Display button to customize the interface during the session. Such items as sorting options, number of records per page, the fields to display within the citation, etc. may be chosen. At the end of the session, all interface default options established by the library will return.
  3. The user may make more permanent changes to the interface when using their "My WilsonWeb" parallel account.

Q. Does WilsonWeb have training materials readily available for users?

A. Yes, WilsonWeb provides a variety of training materials found in its Learning Center located at http://www.hwwilson.com/Documentation/WilsonWeb/learning_center.htm. It includes Quick Tip Sheets, Demos, a link to a YouTube cite for training, and other useful materials.

Q. Will I have a choice of authentication methods with WilsonWeb?

A. Yes, WilsonWeb provides a variety of authentication methods which will parallel the methods currently used with OCLC First Search accounts. For example, WilsonWeb provides the following:

  • IP Address - WilsonWeb supports TCP/IP authentication for static, non-static, and shared address ranges.
  • Patron ID/Library Card - Patron ID/Library Card Barcode authentication is used by many libraries for remote access.
  • Proxy server - Most proxy solution users simply register their proxy server's IP address with Wilson's Technical Support and they are authenticated via proxy IP. We also include a proxy prepend feature in our Subscriber Administrator's Module so that the WilsonWeb access URL can be easily modified for the librarian and also usable in navigating through our Journal Directory to the article level.
  • Referring URL - A Referring URL can be used by all accounts, if desired.
  • Athens/Shibbeloth Login - WilsonWeb has an Athens Login link for Eduserv/Athens & Shibbeloth users on the Login page. Athens customers include an academic consortium in the United States called US Higher Education (InCommon). Also available are the following affiliations should they apply - UK federation and SWITCHaai.
  • Terminal Authentication - WilsonWeb also supports Terminal Password Authentication. A cookie is placed on the workstation that will permit access to the WilsonWeb databases
  • Username and Password - WilsonWeb supports the use of username and password authentication, if desired.
