Children's CatalogPrint Format: 4-year service

Children’s Core Collection-20th Edition
The standard of collection development for over a century!

Providing the highest standards of guidance in collection development and maintenance, as well as curriculum support, readers’ advisory, and general reference, Children’s Core Collection has been an indispensable tool in libraries for over 100 years.

The publication of the first H. W. Wilson Children’s Catalog in 1909 put an end to the haphazard system where teachers, printers, authors, ministers, and other interested parties compiled separate “Best Books” lists each year, offering instead a basic bibliography of recommended books compiled by a group of acknowledged experts.

The principles that made Children’s Catalog such a success continue to inform the compilation of each edition of Children’s Core Collection today.

The 20th edition features:

  • Approximately 10,000 titles in the main edition (2010), covering fiction and nonfiction works, story collections, picture books, graphic novels, and magazines recommended for readers from preschool through sixth grade.
  • Professional literature for children’s librarians, both periodicals and books.
  • Approximately 10,000 titles in the main edition (2010), over 7,000 of which are new to this edition.
  • Broad revisions in areas of environmental protection, science, and religion, as well as fiction and picture books.
  • Four-year service (Includes hardcover volume plus three annual paperbound supplements)
  • $210 ($225 outside U.S. and Canada)
  • Approx. 1,700 pages
  • ISBN 978-0-8242-1106-6
  • Approximately 2,200 new titles listed in annual paperbound supplements published 2011 through 2013.
  • Classified Catalog: entries listed by Abridged Dewy Decimal Classification, with separate sections for nonfiction, fiction, and short story collections.
  • Essential purchases indicated with a star.
  • Author, title, and subject index, providing an in-depth key to the information in the Classified Catalog (including author, title, and subject access to the discrete parts of each anthology or collection).
  • Hardcover volume: September 2010
  • Paperback supplements: 2011, 2012, 2013, each approximately 400 pages

"Isn't it interesting that we sometimes forget our own best resources in our rush to look for something. A wise person reminded me of WilsonWeb and Children's Catalog online. If you don't have it, ask your district if they would consider it....an excellent source for collection development."
