An Annotated Anthology with Ideas for Introducing Children to Poetry
By Caroline Feller Bauer
It’s easy. It’s quick. It’s effective.
Essentially, someone walks around your building with a sign and a poem. He
or she pops into each classroom and calls out: "Poetry Break!"
Everyone looks up as a poem is read aloud. The listeners return to their
activities, the poetry person continues to the next room. To mount a Poetry
Break at your school, here’s everything you need, including a collection
of over 240 poems children love by such favorites as Jack Prelutsky, Eve
Merriam, Arnold Lobel, Eloise Greenfield, and Shel Silverstein.
About the Author – Caroline Feller Bauer

speaking to librarians, teachers, and parents on how to get children and
books together." To this end, she has conducted her lively, imaginative
seminars in 50 states and 28 countries. In 1968, Dr. Bauer was the first
woman to receive the Ersted Award for distinguished teaching and was given
the Dorothy McKenzie Award in 1986 for her contribution to children’s
