Review from: Choice, October
1995
British historians, political
junkies, and trivia fans will all be delighted by the information provided
in this wonderful book. The introductory material is clear, concise, and
helpful for all, whatever one's level of knowledge of the British political
system. The bulk of the book consists of biographical entries on each of the
prime ministers. Details include a portrait, personal and family
information, a summary of the political career, quotations, and the location
of paintings, sculptures, and other memorials. The amazingly complete
information includes some 1995 data. By coincidence, former PM Charles
Wilson's death occurred the day the book was received for review. The book
has nearly 100 comparative charts that highlight diverse facts from zodiac
signs to maiden speeches in Parliament. The information included is almost
overwhelming (e.g., one prime minister was born in Canada, more prime
ministers were born Wednesday and more died Tuesday than on any other days),
and this information is not in the miscellany section, either. Researchers
will find helpful the brief bibliographies of works about the prime
ministers (and by them, in some instances). The location of each prime
minister's personal papers is noted. Recommended for all libraries at all
levels.
