Review from: Choice,
March 1996
Weihs's compilation partakes
of three genres of reference information (almanacs, bibliographies, and
histories) and generally succeeds in integrating these genres, which until
now were covered by separate titles (e.g., Corpus Almanac & Canadian
Sourcebook, 30th ed., 1994, Canadian Reference Sources, 2nd ed., 1981, and
The Fitzhenry & Whiteside Book of Canadian Facts and Dates, 1986). For
each province and territory, this handy reference provides standard
almanac information (flag, emblem, coat of arms, motto, geography and
climate, culture and education, demography, government and politics,
finances, economy), identifies important dates in history, and provides a
selected list of books for each province and territory….Extra bits of
information include parks and historic sites and a section that identifies
the first, biggest, and best provincial and territorial accomplishments
(e.g., under Newfoundland, the world's longest sea-fogs, which on the
Grand Banks average less than 915 m. [3,000 ft.] visibility more than 120
days per year). The provincial coat of arms and a small map of Canada are
reproduced at the beginning of each province or territory chapter. An
ideal title for any library needing a general reference book about
Canada." |
