Review from: American Reference Books Annual
2005
Representative American Speeches is the sixth
volume of The Reference Shelf series published annually since 1922
and available as a subscription. The volume presents 29 speeches delivered
during the calendar year on five key subject areas at the forefront of
public debate: War and Foreign Policy, Homeland Security, Freedom of
Speech, Welfare of Children, and The Spirit of Adventure. The first three
topics deal with the hot button issues of war, terrorism, and peace posed
by the war in Iraq. The issues of terrorism reappear in the second topic
on Homeland Security and in the third topic on Freedom of Speech as it
relates to the U.S.A. Patriot Act. The section on Welfare of Children is
linked to the National Conference of Children, 2003 and The Spirit of
Adventure to the centenary of flight. There is a cumulative speaker index
for issues from 2000 to 2003. All the topics are timely and the selections
are well balanced. Representative American Speeches is a valuable resource
in any library. |
