Review from: American Reference Books Annual
2006
Representative American Speeches is the sixth
volume of The Reference Shelf series published annually since 1922
and available as a subscription. The volume presents 23 speeches delivered
during the calendar year on five key subject areas at the forefront of
public debate: “A Divided America,” “Church and State,” “Established and
New Media,” “Seniors and Social Security,” and “America and the New
Europe.” The first three topics deal with the hot button issues of
America's culture wars and homosexuality and family values. The section on
“Established and New Media” discusses Hillary Rodham Clinton's speech on
media in the lives of children and “Seniors and Social Security” discusses
the urgency for social security reform in the United States. There is a
cumulative speaker index for issues from 2000 to 2005. All the topics are
timely and the selections are well balanced. Representative American
Speeches is a valuable resource in any library. |
