Review from: Reference & Research Book News, May 2006
This volume reprints 23 articles published in
American magazines between 2003 and 2005 about the implications for
individual citizen rights of security policies implemented by the Bush
administration in response to 9/11. The compilation examines the USA
Patriot Act, racial profiling to find enemies of the state, detention of
suspects without charge, government surveillance of civilian activities,
gay marriage, and abortion.
Review from:
American Reference Books Annual 2005
The 23 articles presented here will help students
prepare for the latest round of debating championships, where this year's
topic, U.S. Civil Liberties, may appeal to any reader. The source material
selected here is suitable for high school students and above; publications
include The New York Times, National Review, The Wall Street Journal, and
Harper's Magazine. Although the articles selected have been organized into
five sections, the theme of terrorism runs through all but one, “Same-Sex
Marriage and Abortion.” A 400- to 500-word introduction precedes each
section, which provides a brief history of the topic and synopses of the
articles. Articles from the Bill of Rights, the United Nations' Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, and The Defense of Marriage Act make up the
appendix. The 27 books representing various views on civil rights guide
the reader to more resources, but another bibliography of 2 dozen
annotated articles will likely interest students more….U.S. National
Debate Topic 2005-2006: U.S. Civil Liberties is recommended for
public, high school, and undergraduate libraries. |
