Based on
Applied Science & Technology Index
and launched in 1999, this site has been recognized for years as the best
research tool for applied science and technology information. The database
focuses on English-language periodicals and includes leading trade and
industrial publications, professional and technical society journals, and
specialized subject periodicals. Subject areas covered include all
engineering disciplines and more than 25 applied sciences. The database
includes indexing since 1983, abstracts since 1993, and full text since
1997; according to Wilson, 157 titles (125 ongoing, 32 short run) of the
575 indexed are full text. More than 90 percent of the titles are peer
reviewed. The database is updated four times per week. The new WilsonWeb
platform offers quick response times, ExLibris SFX linking technology,
persistent URLs, intuitive screens, and vastly increased searching
functionality. Most users will do well to start with the Advanced Search
screen, as it offers more assisted, focused searching than Basic Search.
Limits are readily available through various dropdown menus. Simple
keyword searches with relevancy-ranked results are easy for first-time
searchers using the default All-Smart Search. Online help is context
sensitive and as a whole well written, clear, and concise. Usage
statistics for the database are ICOLC compliant. Because of its fairly
limited full-text content, this database is recommended only for corporate
and academic collections with either significant periodical holdings that
are indexed by the database or no periodical holdings whatsoever....
