Review from: Reference Reviews, April 2004
Authors, illustrators,
editors, publishers and producers of information that has a commercial
value have strong views on protecting intellectual property. On the other
hand, librarians are duty-bound to provide access to information and
educators wrestle with fair-use policies. Add new technologies to the mix
and it becomes even easier to find and use information, while also making
it somewhat easier to check if a student's paragraphs were taken off the
Internet. This volume looks at "What is Intellectual Property?,"
"Plagiarism," "Copyrights" and "21st Century Piracy." Within the piracy
section one finds that, while Napster is gone, other file-sharing services
continue to be a threat to the music industry. If one wishes to begin the
search for information on intellectual property, this is a good place to
start. The bibliography lists two pages of books, two pages of Web sites
and provides a seven-page list of annotated periodical articles. Highly
recommended. |
