Review from: American Reference Books Annual
2006
An upgrade of a respected reference work, Anne Price's
compendium is an essential…addition to the school and public library,
junior high school, and curriculum planner's professional shelf. As a
check on the core collection, on maintenance of young adult fiction and
nonfiction materials, and as a guide to expansion or discarding, this
Dewey-based text offers a number of useful helps. A compilation of some
6000 outstanding works, it provides author, title, subject, and analytical
indexes and notes some out-of-print titles. As a readers’ advisory,
entries offer brief overviews plus grade level and publishing data.
Coverage aids librarians, curriculum supervisors, and teachers in choosing
classics and new works in an array of genres, including world cultures,
technology, ethics and values, social and political issues, the
environment and ecology, and the protection of endangered species. The key
to this work’s staying power among library reference is its selectivity.
Editor Anne Price understands publishing trends and appreciates the best
of print works for readers in grades 5-9. In addition, a balance of
interests and intellectual levels assures users that library shelves will
answer a variety of users' needs. This work is highly recommended,
especially in budget-conscious institutions that want the most for their
money.
